Nikolai Knipovich and development of international research of the northern seas
Abstract. This paper is focused on the role of the founder of Russian fisheries science, zoologist and oceanographer Nikolai Knipovich (1862-1939) in development of international studies of the northern seas on the eve of the 20th century. It discusses participation of Knipovich in the foundation of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), formation of the first Russian programme in biological oceanography on the base of ICES programmes which was used for the activities of the Murman scientific-fishery expedition led by Knipovich and contact of Knipovich with Scandinavian scientists.
