Science and geopolitics: Russian-Sweden expedition on Svalbard
Abstract. The paper considers the history of the preparation and realization of one of the largest research companies of the late XIX – early XX centuries – Russian-Swedish degree measurements on Svalbard. For a long time the researchers' attention has been focused on the scientific component of the event. The documents discovered in the archives have shown that this expedition had a foreign policy background – the strengthening of the position of Russia in the Arctic archipelago.
